{"id":729,"date":"2010-05-21T08:34:37","date_gmt":"2010-05-21T11:34:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hr-pros.ca\/?p=729"},"modified":"2010-05-21T08:34:37","modified_gmt":"2010-05-21T11:34:37","slug":"is-your-business-ready-for-the-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hr-pros.ca\/fr\/is-your-business-ready-for-the-world-cup\/","title":{"rendered":"Is your business ready for the World Cup?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those of you who can remember the Canada\/USSR Summit hockey series (La S\u00e9rie du si\u00e8cle in French) will recall the passion that overtook Canada that September in 1972.\u00a0\u00a0 I recall schools closing early and special work arrangements being made so that folks could watch the games.\u00a0\u00a0 Everybody was talking about the Summit, it was in all the papers and on TV.\u00a0\u00a0 More recently, Olympic Hockey fever captured our collective attention.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In just a few weeks, another month-long event will capture the attention of a lot of Canadians and of most of the world.\u00a0\u00a0 The 2010 FIFA World Cup will start 11 June and will end on 11 July in South Africa.\u00a0\u00a0 As important as hockey is to the fabric of\u00a0 Canadians, soccer has similar impact on the lives of people around the world.\u00a0 In fact, for a lot of people, the World Cup is a more important event than the Olympics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A word of advice: if you are dealing with customers overseas, you\u2019d better check the World Cup schedule before scheduling an appointment or making that all important phone call.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recent study, conducted during the 2010 Olympics, showed that contrary to what we might assume, the Olympics did not distract employees from their jobs.\u00a0\u00a0 Rather, the Olympics created comradeship and engaged employees in the workplace.\u00a0 As a business owner, you might want to take advantage of the World Cup to\u00a0increase employee engagement.\u00a0 Here are a few suggestions:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Team bonding.\u00a0\u00a0 Use the backdrop of the World Cup for team bonding.\u00a0 Maybe schedule an outing to catch a big game or simply turn on the TV in the boardroom.\u00a0 Create a World Cup bulletin board where stats will be kept.\u00a0\u00a0 Leverage this event and increase team cohesion and morale.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Diversity.\u00a0 Diversity is good for business, in fact it\u2019s a competitive business advantage.\u00a0\u00a0 Where are your employees from? Where are your clients from?\u00a0 Make it an occasion to learn about someone elses&rsquo;s culture.\u00a0\u00a0 You might consider adopting teams that reflect the diversity of your employee and client bases.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Consider flex time.\u00a0 You get the work done and those employees who are die-hard fans get to watch the important games without missing work.\u00a0 Employees who do not care for soccer can also benefit from the flex time schedule.
